500 DAYS OF SUMMER-MOVIE REVIEW

December 5, 2009 § 8 Comments

Image from here.

It’s been a while, since I wrote a movie review. Put it down to not watching enough movies. And there is a good thing about that too- when you do want to watch a movie, you call buzz a friend, ask for a good movie and watch it, no need to worry about getting stuck with a bad one.

This movie is awesome, to say the least. I loved it. “Boy meets girl” story alright, but the ending isn’t what you expect. The music( by Mychael Danna and Rob Simonsen)  is superb, it makes the movie even better. And the acting was damn good, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who plays Tom Hansen) and Zooey Deschanel ( who plays Summer Finn)  bring their characters to life and make you think it is a real story.

The story moves back and forth, between day 1 and day 500. It is about a relationship and it is very “American”, but nothing wrong with that. The girl doesn’t believe in true love and the boy, thinks she is his soul mate. They are “friends” but Tom is not quite sure, if he wants it to be that way.

I like the way the movie builds up, not all that forceful, slow and steady, I had a smile through out the movie, I think 🙂 The sort of movie, you can watch when you want something fun and nice to watch.

I recommenced this one. But those who don’t like “American” types of boy-girl relationship and a bit of swearing and “masala” thrown in, stay away.

Rating- 9/10 ( wanted to give it a 10, but well am not going to rate it too high 😉 )

Slumdog Millionaire-movie review

January 15, 2009 § 18 Comments

Image from here.

Usually, when I write a movie review in my blog,I feel guilty, that I am writing something which is not really what I want to write, but i am doing it for the hits(albeit the fact, that I write reviews only for movies which make an impression). But this movie is different.

No doubt AR.Rahman, fully deserves the Golden Globe. In fact, this is a movie which deserves the Oscars. The directing, dialogues, acting, camera, this, that and everything was perfect.

The movie is about a boy(or man) ,18 years old, from the world famous slums of Mumbai. He goes on to will Rs.20,00,000/- in a reality show-Who wants to be a millionaire? The role of the protagonist is played by Ayush Mahesh Khedekar, Tanay Chheda and  Dev Patel.

Jamal Malik,is being questioned in the police station-how on earth, did a slumdog, manage to get into a position ,where if he answers the next question,he would be a Millionaire twenty times over? The usual cinema style portrayal of the Indian police, kicks of the movie. But when he faints during the shock treatment. The police inspector(Irrfan Khan),decides to question in a more humane way.

As each question of the previous night,is roled out,Jamal narrates, how he knew the answer. He goes on to narrate the grim life of a “slumdog”.He knew an answer to a question, because his mom was killed in communal violence,he knew another, thanks to the people who make children beg and almost took his eyes away. The role of the show host is played by Anil Kapoor.

The “Three Muskeeters”(the book by Alexander Dumas,ha!another one to read),all are untied  after the communal violence. In the end,it is all for the third Muskeeters ;”For you, a thousand times over….” from the book “The Kite Runner”,aptly describes the movie. The three Muskeeters are Jamal,Salim( Jamal’s elder brother, played by Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail,Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala and Madhur Mittal)  and Lathika(Freida Pinto,Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar,Rubiana Ali).

It is truly a candid movie. It decepits the dirty world of slum.It also shows us,how “dons” are born. This being a English movie, does provoke a feeling,”they always portray India like this” , but then how are we going to make them change it?

I don’t want to reveal anything about the movie.I would give it a 5/5.Only thing there a few scenes which might make a few people cry.Would say a above 15 film(I don’t kids will really appreciate,a kid being blinded,so as to beg, gruesome indeed).

Thanks to wiki for the names. If you want a detalied review, you can find it there.

Quantum of Solace-movie review

Someone please kill him! Well yes,he is James Bond alright, but come on how can he escape all those attempts to kill him? Let it be a car chase(the movie starts with Bond driving a Aston Martin in Seina ,chased by the bad guys as usual) or boat banging or the Aeriel  ,none of them can even tickle the guys shoelace!Seriously,Bond makes our wondrous tamil superstars look like mortals!

Daniel Craig  seriously looks old!The actresses are pretty good(ya and well its Bond movie,so he gets the girls).I liked the performance of Olga Kurylenko(who does the role of Camille) the best.

The movie is too fast paced,at times you are left wondering what is going on.There are a lot of “I will shoot and I don’t give a hoot” movies out there and this one is just one among the lot.The only reason why it even has this reception,i feel is because its a Bond movie.Compared to Casino Royale(this is a sequel to it) ,this is bad.
Story:-

Bond is out to seek revenge for the death of Vesper(The lady who dies in Casino Royale) and he meets Camille who it seems is also after the same person. The face of the enemy(it seems) is Dominc Greene( Mathieu Amalric) who heads Greene planet and is a member of the Quantum. He is involved in organising a coupde’tat in Bolivia and all he wants in return is a desert, but why? The Americans too seem to have a finger in the pudding. What on earth is going on?

What exactly is Greene planet after? What is this Quantum?

Bond Never really gets his revenge. The movie ends with Bond walking away into the night in Russia.Of course Mr.White(whom he manages to capture in the beginning of this movie but manages to escape) is out and Quantum is seems to a mystery.

Final word:-

Well if you like Bond, then you might enjoy it.There weren’t many gadgets in this one.It is all about Bond chasing and being chased -cars,boats and planes. As I said ,the movie is too fast paced and it could have been slower. It got monotonous in certain places because I have seen those type of scenes before in other movies. In the next movie at least they should send a bullet through him or get him poisoned (like in Casino Royale). The music was superb, especially the opening song( Another way to die by Alicia Keys and Jack White)The acting was pretty good but still i don’t like Craig.Rowan Atkinson seriously is still better(Jonny English).

rating:-3/5(well after all its a dumb bond movie).

Journey to the center of the earth-movie review

September 28, 2008 § 22 Comments

Put on your 3D glasses and get set to travel to the center of the earth. The movie is about how, three people -Prof.Trevor Anderson(Brendan Fraser),his nephew Sean(Josh Hutcherson) and Hannah(Anita Briem) end up at the center of the earth. The movie is based on Jules Verne’s classic,’Journey to the center of the earth.’
Beneath the earth surface lies a world, which once was on the top.The journey begins, when Sean, comes to Trevor’s home, with a few of his father’s(Trevor’s brother) collection. In it is a copy of the book(Journey to the center of the earth),with notes scribbled on the side. The professor, who is in search of the a way to the center of the earth, finds the solution,in the notes. They go to Iceland, where they meet Hannah. They get caught in a thunder storm, while trying to find clues and get shut into a cave. From there on the journey to the center begins.

The movie is one surely worth a watch. The acting is pretty good,i liked  Josh Hutcherson’s(Sean) acting the best.A movie which one can enjoy. It invovles a bit of rock science and a few ancient creatures.I haven’t read the book,so i am off to get it.Once i read the book,i will be able to make a comparison between it and the movie, but am sure, the book will be better.I will give it a 4/5.

Kismat Konnection-movie review

August 16, 2008 § 12 Comments

Boy meets girl.Boy was the most promising one in college, but has no success.Meets girl. She is his lucky charm.well the rest you know i guess.WOW! unbelievable no twists nothing, just simple and straight forward.

But this is worth a watch. For one thing Shahid does his role well.In certain places it was almost like a repeat ok Jab we met,but still it was worth my time, especially since we all had a nice time guessing the story. It had a few laughs here and there and the main highlight of the movie was the speech in the last scene.

I didn’t like any of the songs and why go all the way to CANADA? I agree with what Nita says(though the comment is with respect to another movie,i see it apply here too ) :

Frankly that’s getting boring. I mean, who wants to see the Swiss Alps in Hindi movies again and again and again! Sometimes I wonder if the actors and crew go abroad because they want a foreign holiday or because they want the film to appeal to the NRI market…it certainly isn’t necessary for the story. And I am sure NRI’s would love to see India more than anything else.

For this movie, any Indian city would have been fine.Or is it that the same problems can’t be dealt with here?Or well maybe they all seriously needed a holiday. What do these people get out of making so many flop movies?I mean this kind of stuff isn’t going to sell right? Then why do such things? The main idea behind any business is to make profit and these people are supposed to be doing that. The only thing they are doing is making actors richer and richer ,this is not needed, let them make their money by really entertaining us,not by doing such dumb movies! I understand the message the movie wanted to convey, but having made us forget about using our brain ,how do they expect to put across their message in the last scene of the movie? The intention was good, but to put across your message you need powerful stuff.I am not going to rate this one.

Well doing one role is tough alright, but to roles ranging from an old granny to Bush ,from a medieval priest to a scientist, well it takes some doing. Before i start writing a review,i must say that even if you don’t understand tamil, get a CD with the sub-titles and watch it.It is a must watch.

I knew this movie would be good, first thing,it was Kamal movie and second a lot of people didn’t like it.The reason why most people didn’t like is obvious. The movie needs a lot of interpretation. The movie unites people from different cultures, different faith and beliefs all in one final stand off.It was amazing! to say the least. How does the Shivite and Vishnavite fight in the medieval time have to do with the tsunami? That is the profoundity of the movie. The whole movie is based on the chaos theory.

Kamal Hassan is acting is not just superb but more than that.To act in so many different roles and to relate them all is amazing.Except in a few places(very very little) the movie didn’t have any slag. While the makeup was not as convincing in a few roles as others,it was good.In fact i think it was better that way,it had more of a drama feel to it,than a movie.I wonder if it is based on some book, for it had so much intelligence in it .Moneys are sure clever than man!(it has something to do with the move:P )

Asin does a good job too.And Mallika does her cameo well too.The villian, the hero and all most of the important characters played by the same person,it is sure worth spending your three hours. As i said in the beginning ,it is worth watching this movie,so go and see it now 🙂

These two songs have become one of favorites(ya,the never ending list). All the songs were good, but these two (especially the first one stand out for the lyrics).

the senseless stuff!(well maybe that half an hour or so a jumping board for the end)And slowly as we moved to the end,OMG! i had to double check if i was watching a hindi movie or tamil movie! What the hell, seriously? It was so boring in the middle segment, that if not for the little twinkle of hope left in me ,that it would be better,i would have ran away! And well the ending, would seriously require a Rats wah!wah! or rather a meow, meow song! seriously!God my friends are way better at telling these long, incredibly ‘blade’ jokes! Ok i feel to the floor laughing, because all other reactions/emotions died, seriously they were buried by the sheer stupidity!

I know this contradictory to what many others have said. But then seriously the movie would have left a better impression if the emotions in th middle were avoided ,i mean it was supposed to be a funny movie, they could have used it through out the movie or at least they should have made it a little less serious in the movie.

the songs are really really nice.ARR’s beats ,well you that they are the best right now.The lyrics are important for any song and the lyricist Abbas Tyrewalla has done a good job.

Anyway i would give this one 6/10 or maybe even 5.i have seen a lot of better movies than this, surely, but it did make me laugh a bit.

Anyway here is a song from the movie…

Where Am I?
