A shot at the world record for the most number of participants in a live painting competition

January 29, 2010 § 18 Comments

The Rotary Club of Madras Central organized a drawing competition, “Chithiram Pesuthadi”. The competition aimed to break the existing world record for the most number of participants in a live painting competition(Guinness  record) .  About 16000-20000 students participated and I guess that should do it(the official numbers should be submitted to Guinness before conformation).

Probably the only place in the city, which can hold so many people at the same time, is the Chepauk Stadium. The event co-sponsored by Abirami Mega mall was inaugurated by The Mayor of Chennai, M.Subramaniam and the governor of Rotary District 3230. The competition kicked off at about 11:30 and got over at about 1:00 pm.

It was well organized and thought out. Wooden stands and cardboards were placed in front of the seats, to make it easier for the children to paint. Paints, brushes, pencils , erasers, papers etc were provided by the organizers along with snacks and water.

It was a breath-taking site, to see so many young artists paint at the same time. The event saw both private schools as well as corporation schools taking part(the latter being more disciplined). It was a humongous event, especially considering the logistics involved.

Special buses were organised, organizers recruited and of course preparing the painting stands and making sure every child gets a proper chance at painting. And the children did justice to the opportunity provided. The differently abled children should get a special mention, especially this boy:-

And this kid too:-

Funny, none of the television channels seemed to have covered it(correct me if I am wrong). After all it is not every day such an event is going to take place. As mentioned the corporation school kids were way better- kids from private schools started flinging the cardboards provided on to the ground and the teachers and volunteers couldn’t do anything about it. Fortunately, nothing went out of control.

In all the event was a big success. The police and the corporation of Chennai should get a special mention. The results will be announced soon.

The new progeny

The power fluttered,
and movements rendered.
Myriad hours flowed by,
and the time stuck,just.
With nothing to feel,
but red rage,nothing to
give,to give, except
painful blood,it was the
last stand,the hour
when it would end,
just like that,
just like when it began.
The caprice was done,
the phantasmagoria of
the emotions began.
With nothing to win or lose,
he broke down and told the truth.
“It was not long ago,
when something arose,
a arrow without a bow.
With much force behind,
it seemed immaculate and divine.
Yet it was too mystic,
it was too futuristic,
to even predict,
where it would lead.
It was too pragmatic,
to be read,
it was too intimate,
to be felt.
And so,it grew,
and life it threw,
everywhere.
Yet there was no one,
except us,who knew,
where it began,
and that we guarded,
and we never departed
from its hateful chatter,
lest it should shatter,
that which arose,
from it.We chose,
to honor our honor,
by fortifying it,though
it ate all out valor.
Our strength we gave,
just for the sake,
for life to be safe.
We held our heroes
close to its toes,
and to them it breathed,
flattering voes,
yet they never gave a ear,
for to them earth was dear.
Until one day,it chose fear.
And from it rose the demons,
which started to create menace.
Caught in the center,
we didn’t know which was better,
the disgusting creator,
or its obedient messenger.
To it we called ourselves angels,
and then surrendered,
and it gave language to us.
From the heights of a lean tower,
it dropped us,to life,
and there we slowly began to die.
We knew the ancient decree,
we knew that now we had been set free,
but at the cost of life’s roots,
at the cost of inertial moods.
On earth we extended our stand,
and on earth our race ran.
Then we cut our moral ,
and killed that we guarded.
And from its yolk rose another,
the one which became the avenger.
Understanding the sin,
we threw ourselves to its mercy,
and it laughed and kicked our legacy.
It vowed to get the better of us,
and all those of intellectuals,
the eternal glittering jewels,
of our kind,were sacrificed;
Yet they never failed to arise
as if they understood the undefined.
In pain,without anything to gain,
we left nothing of them to remain.
Then one day,one of them rose
and at that moment,we chose,
to relight our fires.
And that the devil,heard,
and at that it unleashed,
and at that it unsealed,
the last weapon of pain,
that which set the reign,
of the unnamed.
With purposeless darkness,
into the flightless Grey,
slowly we went down the drain,
all our efforts in vain.”
Then before he could finish,
a cry was heard,
and it was another birth.
There was a new life,
and with its knife,
it cut the last man,
and thus ended this stand.
And a ship was set sail,
in the red water,
and as it touched shore,
from its door,
flew a bird,
the new progeny of earth.

stop it!let there be peace…

What is the worth of human life?
what is the worth of human life?

Why what would you get by taking it away?
What would you get by not showing another day?
Why would you want to kill?
Why would you want to suppress people?
What will you get if you hurt others?
What will you get if you split lovers?
What will you get if you break a leg?
What will you get if you make others beg?
Why would anyone want to kill?
why would you want people to freeze still?

Is fear the right rule?
why kill others to satisfy your duel?

Why, is it fair to harm others,
is it right to spoil the creators?
What gain is worth so much blood?
what gain is worth, by raining down a hellish flood?

What bad did the people do?
What bad did the people do?
except being innocent and nothing to do with you.

Is fighting worth it?
Does chopping a couple of heads settle it?
whose life are they anyway?
for you to relish and throw away?
Whose life is it anyway?
for to weigh and say?
Why do you want to kill,
and send down panic shrill?

The world has many other ways,
haven’t battles been won with peaceful says?

Please we understand you have been hurt,
please understand that we all are also being hurt,

we are willing to help you,
for it is the same fire in us,which is in you.
We are willing to help you,
We will teach you,
that we humans are capable of love too.
So stop this, let us settle our dues, through
not  blood or pain,
for when life is lost it can’t come back again,

so let us understand each other,
let us notice what we did was not for the better.

this is not for me or for you-not for us,
but for your dear future. If you want them to love us,
and see as good predecessors,
let us not call ourselves bombers or killers,
but as lovers.Let us not hurt each other,
let us all call each other as brothers and sisters.

let us learn the language of love,
there is nothing below or above.
Let us all forget hypocrisy
let us relish that we are a part of humanity.
Let us celebrate the worth of life,

let us just for a change be nice.
So we will drop our guards
and you drop your weapons.
No one will kill ever again.
No one will ever kill again,
no this is not a dream,
this is the will of the ever lasting stream,
the stream, which beat down in ancient times,
the stream which stores all the rimes,
so to flow with the flow,
let us let go,
of violence,let us savor,
a new,profound understanding silence.

Live and let live,
but love and let others love.

the light shines the brightest.

This is my reaction to the recent serial bombings in Bangalore and Ahmadabad and also the book “A Thousand Splendid Suns.”
