Something we are all used to- a movie not living upto the ‘buildup’ given. But not a Rajinikanth film- no way . It is entertaining, engaging and fun!

Alright this isn’t the best movie ever or as mind blowing as some claim it to be(probably because we expected this much at least?). But it is easily worth that ticket, parking fee and snacks, not to mention your precious time.

For once the action and effects(in a Tamil movie) are very real. Why not? Stan Wilson Studios(Terminator, Jurrasic Park etc) were the ones doing it. The fight scenes were cool too- Yuen Woo-Ping is the stunt coordinator after all.
The music(in the tamil version) is good, but not the best of ARR. Though I don’t get how you can wear a shirt, jacket and a neck scarf in the middle of a desert(or for that matter even in Chennai). But reality is not a top priority here, just watch and crib that your work doesn’t take you to Macchu Picchu.
Rajini’s acting is as good as ever. The way he plays the robot is awesome, #epic ! In fact the movie is a success because of Rajini. The movie is as much about him as the story. You know the director is good when he can make Aishwarya Rai move a couple of facial muscles. But yes, she does look like a doll in a couple of songs(hmm..no wonder the robot fell in love with her:P).
While Tamil films in the past have tended to be generic, we have seen a bit of experimentation in the last few years. But certain things like the music and dance(at times ill-timed), comedians etc seem to form the ‘core’, which now seem to define a Tamil movie.
The story in itself is worth thinking about as well. What happens when machines can emote? Or wait, what happens if we become machines than can emote? Maybe we should realize our own vanity-all it takes is to remove the chip with the destruction program.
Watch this movie in Tamil with subtitles. Otherwise, I’m sure it will be as comical and vexing as watching a Hollywood movie dubbed in Tamil. Have fun- think of this as a pantomime and not a serious Drama. If you are going to watch it in the theatres, take someone along, don’t go alone.

Dream within a dream, within another dream! How well can you execute that? And how about trying to ‘place’ an idea(inception) in another person’s mind? That’s what the movie is about.
The basic story line is simple and that is one of the strong point of the film- that leaves plenty of time for the idea of ‘inception’ to be dealt with and presented. Some reviewers might have told you there is a bit of ‘gray’, yes there is, but then you are expected to make up your mind. After all, why should they not make you think?
What’s surprising is that this is called a sci-fi, it seems more philosophical than scientific. Wonder if we have a term for philosophical films- phi-fi ? Or maybe that doesn’t give it any label value. Or is it those guns and ‘chemicals’ ?

The acting is really good. Dicaprio plays his part well. It is nice to see a female lead who isn’t tying to be hot and clever at the same time(that’s only in sci-fi right?)-Ellen Page, moves and creates what she is supposed to, efficiently. Tom Hardy(who plays Eames) is stands out as well.
The dream world’s are damn cool. The part where Ariadne creates her first dream is superb. Of course you need to have a clear head to get the dream within dream within dream part. The movie does expect you to carry your brain along, not leave it at home like you do for certain other movies.
And what is reality anyway? The sounds? The music? The people? The actors? Your past? The future? The present? What you believe? Your dreams? Hope everyone starts dreaming now 🙂

Cho sweet.
Whatever.
Heard inception is good. Damn should have booked for that.
Funny ending.
Kids will love this.
WTH did I expect?
*thinks about hot wheels*
Is this a sort of metaphor/satire? Nope. Plain funny little toys.
Very clever. Awesome imagination. As usual animation is a waste, nothing 3D about it.
rating:-8/10. See I actually liked it. Fortunately just when I was about to doze off, it got funny.

Between all that hype, everyone knew that this wasn’t going to be a ‘modern classic’ and it isn’t one. If you forget the hype and look beyond, the movie is good.

The first half is pretty confusing. It takes you a while to realize that you need to wait for the story to be revealed(in the second half). The movie is too loud- my immediate reaction. No humour or funny scenes(fine, there were a couple of attempts, but between all the shouting and macabre, no one felt like laughing) and then it dawns upon you that the writer and dircetor(Mani Ratnam) wants to convey a message.
Problem is, you probably though that this is a ‘family movie’, it isn’t. That sicking feeling, when you see hands being cut off or a woman talking about being raped(Priyamani, plays Veeraiyya’s sister) persists through out the movie. Maybe the idea is to make us think. Think about why extremists/ Robinhoods of the world exist.
Vikram acts really well. You are afraid of him. Initially you think he is a psychopath but later you realize he is human- one with feelings. In fact when he is killed, you admire him. Aishwarya(who plays Raagini), well there are many other actresses who would have done a better job. She seems out of place, but her acting in the second half is decent. Prithviraj’s acting is good- you do loath him in the end.
The music is made for the movie and blends in well. The movie has been shoot in some amazing locations(though you do notice that the places are different) and the camera work is pretty good. The characters are well thought out. Over all it is worth watching. You are expected to take your brains along, connect the dots and form an understanding.
It is far from an ‘entertainer’, be prepared to go through some gruel and gory. Avoid it if you don’t have the gut and the brain.

Last minute call from friends and I found myself in Sathyam, on a leather chair, having paid 30Rs. for parking, rushed through the traffic, dressed up hurriedly-was it worth all this? …..Yes, the movie is awesome!

Fine, this doesn’t have a mind blowing story line or awesome gadgets, but then it entertains, is funny and has a couple of morals between all that. The acting is pretty good too. Jaden Smith(who plays Dre) acts well- guess is it is in his blood(?). Jackie Chan- don’t we all love him!
The movie starts of with Dre and his mom(played by Taraji P. Henson) leaving Detroit and moving to Beijing. Dre gets on the wrong side of a bully(who beats him up) and starts hating his new home. Enter Jackie, who plays Mr.Han, the maintenance man, who also happens to know Kung Fu. Dre enters an open competition after challenged by Cheg and his master. Nothing out of ordinary, no twist and turns. What you expect happens.
Even if the entire story is predictable, if the movie is well made then it is worth watching. And this one fits into that category. It has a kiss scene among other things-wonder why you need to show kids kissing, an American obsession perhaps?
Over all, it is an entertainer. Predictable but enjoyable. The acting is good and you don’t feel that you are wasting money on it. The action looks real and the kid looks damn fit.
Watch it if you like kung fu movies/Jackie movies. Kids will enjoy this for sure. No unwanted masala and it has a couple of good messages too.
