Because you are calling me a potential rapist

April 18, 2012 § 5 Comments

Read IIT Madras’ new safety plan. This adds to what has been happening in the country- various authorities suggesting that the only to ensure safety of women is to lock them up.

As a guy this offends me. Because my mother taught me to respect women. My school taught me to see girls as my equal. The measures suggest that as an individual I have no self-control. That I cannot but be a pervert. That I cannot respect another individual’s rights. That I have no propriety. That I am a camel, waiting to be let loose on the streets. It puts me on par with rapists.  It equates my morality with people of baser stuff. It says that I cannot be trusted to let people walk on streets without molesting them. It suggests that people should hide from me, should run away because I could molest them, I could rape them and no one can do anything about it but run away.

I grew up among a lot of strong women- aunts, grand mothers, great grandmothers even- all strong in their own respect. I know women who are strong, who have borne the brunt of a prosaic, imposing and inhibiting culture and yet are successful today. These rules disregard years of struggle which they have gone through to seek nothing more than to claim what is their natural right(and the letters of law.) It undermines and seeks to impose a morality of an earlier time. It seeks to undo the work of those social reformers and their work. It also equates men to monsters, not deserving rights and responsibilities.

And to even suggest, my sister cannot walk on the roads, in her own neighbourhood, in her own city, in her own country because apparently men can’t think of anything else but rape, is shocking.  While parents telling a girl to stay at home at least has some grounds, organizations and governments which are responsible for making this world a better place adopting such a stance, is demeaning not only the law but also to us as humans. It tries to validate an act, which shows not just the person but the society as something without respect, as a jungle without law.

This is not just about empowering women but emancipating our society from the thought that men are rapists. But by imposing dubious rules, we are in effect against a civilized society. The institutions which impose these rules, show a lack of backbone. They are trying to validate a stand that men are rapists.

All of us are not rapists. Stop making us feel like monsters. How about locking up those who men who give us a bad name? How about teaching them to respect women?

I feel offended. Yes, this might not be about me, but it affects me. Because you are calling me a potential rapist.

Our education system

Our education system

July 16, 2010 § 12 Comments

It is really tough to turn a blind eye to anything- after all NEWS follows us like a curse. Unfortunately, we are forced to believe and deal with things-whether they are real or not. Though I know not many are going to read this post, I still intend to write this-I need to appease my twitching self.

Normal events are turned into extraordinary stories, yet no one gives a damn the way colleges are run in the country. All of us know the state of college education in this country, the politics, the money and ofcourse the teaching(or the lack of it). yet no one, no one, has the guts to do anything about it.

It is not indifference or  inertia, but the fear- for you know you are alone and have no clue whom you are fighting.  The common feeling is that you need to make ‘scarifies’ to make this system better-true. But we don’t have anything to gain by making this ‘scarifies’ ? Maybe.

Read this article in the Hindu(from the open page)- The tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth!

Thankfully I have a really good dentist! But how on earth can a dentist not have ‘practical’ exposure? Oh! and the money- I do not know the exact numbers, but I am sure it will be mind boggling.

Making a Choice:-

Before it was about saving money for marriages, today parents save money to put their kids in colleges. Fine, it is a dream worth chasing, but:-

1)Is he/she capable of doing that course?

2) Is the college good? Does it have professors?

3) Even then, is it the best option? Does he/she really like the course?

4) Is it for the sake of the subject or for the apparent gold at the end of this monochrome rainbow?

5) Why not invest the same money? Putting a roof over your kid’s head or giving him assets which he can use to build on is more important than this supposed education. Anyway, my friends tell me that what you learn in college is not what you use in ‘life’.

The problem is bad career counselling. The truth is that if you were to take the commerce stream either your dad is rich or you are dumb. There are many who think CAs sit and write accounts!

Schools(at least the premier and notable ones) should take it upon themselves(after all the money which they take….) to educate the kids on various options. It is always tough to make a choice, but it is easier if you have information to back it. And not everyone can into IIT, so shouldn’t you know what your head is worth before hand?

Whom to Blame?

Now we can’t blame the students alone or their parents. Aren’t there Councils and Boards and Institutes to regulate education? Apparently no one gives a damn. The country does mill along, you see. I wonder what will happen if the ever alive politicians of  our gen. were to pop off- who is capable of leading this country? And at the state level, do I need to say anything? Apparently we have poor than anyone else in the world.

Unbalanced development they say. I am no great economist, but where do others find the money to pay bribes, those hefty ‘donations’ etc?

Let me ask you one thing- is being not corrupt un-Indian? Maybe that should be the litmus for belonging here, we can kick the rest into the ocean- they will swim and land up in the US, UK or somewhere.

What do we fix?

Fix the education system- it is really easy to say it. I am as helpless as you and the person next to you. For what do we attack? the government? The statutory bodies? The Media(for being not so open and proactive)? Ourselves?

What is the face of corruption? It seems to be a faceless mass. We can’t out stare it, we can’t immunize ourselves against it. You and me are going to be infected by it and  being virtuous doesn’t keep out the bug. Time we either work out something- after all, you who agrees with me and you who know what I am talking about, you who has to watch everyone, including yourself being eaten away by this, has a life to live.

What can we do? Nope, i can’t find a way, not even on paper. It is pitiable, really. We know what is going to happen- violence, racism, castism, language issues, religion and protests etc. Expect it to arise in colleges. Expect to watch more shows on TV and more panelist discussion and to read more awesome articles in NEWS papers with your morning coffee.

Be ready to share your rage with everyone, in the false security of your home. Be ready to pay your way through everything and be ready to click on the retweet buttons on all those reality checks.

In more despair than hope, I end this post, right now. No, not even the evergreen optimist I am, can finish this is good light. True, something pulls this country along, God knows what! Till then we will keep producing the best in everything as well- the challenges presented are pretty tough and to rise above it, you need a hell a lot of strength, passion and will power.

Hullaballoo in the country

March 22, 2009 § 14 Comments

We love our country and there can be no doubt about our nationalism , in fact in the concrete jungle you and me live in,we love it so much, that all we do is take those vagabonds of democracy as a daily factor. Why wouldn’t it be? After all we are more bothered about “soft-ware”  and our OS,but when a Virus does infect we might realize it is time to get a good anti-virus.Anyway these are the things which had their two paise of thought-value, i.e. which caused the proponent , paradigm persuader in me to surface during my exams.

-I can vouch for my city. Those on two wheels have no sense. In a jam packed traffic jam,you can find these heroes “fly” much like their namesakes in ads and block the opposite lanes ; Maybe their logic is based on the sumptuous ideology of “equality” which very few people understand anyway. Oh! and to add to that, how about this, they try to ape the anorexic curves of their revered feminine leads by meandering around cars and buses, causing the drivers of those  to brake over and over again,hmm..how will the traffic move? You know all it takes to get your lisence,is five hundred rupees.

And I should add ,they don’t have any respect for such things as  “one ways” , ” no U turns” etc etc.And our famous Auto drivers, well they are from another planet, Chennai is not complete without them and their “Madras Tamil”.

So I started of with something not important at all. And you can’t blame me.There is so much happening around, that you fail to realize that this is one country.

-In a porous and beguile corner of the country, a politican  went about haranguing his affiliation to 80% of the population. And with all sincere sinistral anti-secular chauvinism he raved about the power at his disposal. He is standing for elections you see and the likes of Hitler came to power after such critical acclimation isn’t it?  He is a victim according to his own palpable pride ,whether he is  or not, the election commission cannot do anything about it,they can’t ban him, even he was, what would be the difference? Remember the ban on smoking?

-Apparently we live in a country, where seats are fought for. A political music chairs ensued and every party and every member wants a chair, they all are running literally, fueled by the Omnipresent media and their bulletin tunes . Personally I would like to see Congress in power, mainly because the “others” seem to be too…,too….well fill it up. And well a politician should be a called a politician.

-And talking about election the nation is all jagoore and 49-O . No I am not trying to say don’t use it,but you are using it to what purpose? Who cares about your vote? Come on ,you have a television set, they have IPL for you, live from England or SA ,go watch that,a convenient agreement.

From photoshopped

-Yup they call it the Indian Premier League. And rightly so,we send it to the isle this year, the isle from where it came. The sad thing of course is that, they would be competing with football.I know a few who are members of fan clubs ,now there goes your money,go fight like those people on MTV shows for your money back. And I don’t like cricket anyway. Taking in the fact that the football season is at its tail end, people would care more about their football teams than the cricket ones ( Arsenal shall win the FA and the champions league I tell you!)

-There was a spectacle over a pair of old spectacles. Apparently that particular pair will cure all addicts of their alcoholism and proliferate down to the prop-a-ganged masses and make the cities all clean and white. I think they would erect the statue of the father of communal-ism here(who ever he is) and also the patron of corruption, surely we are sinners if we don’t?

There is of course a lot more, when I say lot, hell of a lot more. But then NEWS now days,is really fast that, even terrorists are finding to get their full fifteen minutes of fame. And all this makes me wonder, what is this reality? I maybe an Idealist(my next post is about that) but I am sure who knows the reality. This person seems to be( do read the blog, amazing stuff).

We of course had the horrorscope and the stamp scam stamped away. An update on something more closer to home,YU! has woken up at last ,do participate.

And now I will go back to questioning myself about my blog’s ever depreciating authority,if only this was a Vols it would ” depreciation for now,Appreciation forever”(or something like that,I like that ad).

P.S: Thankfully I used the spell check. It seems in the past two weeks,my spellings have taken a new induction to the retro me.

P.P.S:- This is my attempt to improve i.e., keep it short and be more gracious in using punch-u-nations.

Education and Making sense of it all

February 14, 2009 § 14 Comments

Over the past few weeks ,I have been reading and seeing a lot, both in the main stream media and the blogosphere.
And trying to fit it all and make sense of it all seems pretty tough.

First of all frankly I am disappointed both by the action and the reaction. The actions were strong, the reactions stronger. It did give me satisfaction to see that those who tried to sell the devil’s trap got some knickers on their face. But then thinking again into the root of all this, where did all this start?

Over 60 years have gone since independence, yet such primitive values stick around. We shouldn’t forget that emancipation started with the times of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.Yet after all these years, medieval values still have managed to survive. What is more startling is the amount of people who are ready to take such values and infact go about trying to enforce them.

I had written a post ,saying that these have risen from the society and education is the way. Yet how are going to do it is a good question. From what I have observed, values are  not thought, they are acquired.I don’t think I would need to give an illustration for that, just think about it.

Now then what do people who subsribe to such lowly values find attractive in them that they take it? What comfort does morally binding others into their homes get? From past we can take it that this is a threat to very priniciple of lazies faire ,what starts today with what we wear, might tomorrow lead to the idea that money is the root of evil.

At first reading Ayn Rand’s books,I was left with a lot to think. What disturbed me was her discription of human society. The illustration of what can happen to the society with the sacrilegious principles was condescending. For someone who essentially believed that goodness is the “eternal fountain” suddenly seeing a scrummage of parasites against humans was shocking.Surely such a juxtapose is an exaggeration? And there are enough white cells to kill the viruses?

And then it made sense.I just saw the world around. And then the slow build up of events.I looked closer and true enough, there were enough Viruses(no these weren’t parasites, these were viruses) to keep us humans under check. And the fact that man has dominated other creatures seems to be more the reason for these creatures to survive and wear a human skin and breed.More like a Trojan,I would say. They have waited patiently and now they seem to be out in the open breeding and spreading again.

Yet many of us dream of a utopian world. And that made us react.Abeit a aforementioned happiness, something still doesn’t seem right. True enough,it starts as a bud and then blooms into a revolution, but are we watering the right flower?

Let us say ,we do manage to control this out break. Let us say we manage to cure AIDS ,but that doesn’t mean we are free from it just yet.The virus can evolve. Now are we ever going to cull something like that? As you know once the bug enters, you don’t immediately become sick,it wears you down, that is the ultimate aim of it all.How do we know if something is in us,if it doesn’t act? What is society’s blood?

India is her villages,is something we all know. Then there lies our blood? even though there has been an exodus and the agri drain to the cities, our test should lie there. All of us,are comfortable with our cities and our surroundings.Yet this wonder drug will be fought by the creatures, they would still want to eat you(I mean the principles not the people) . Then the only solution is to give this drug to the sick.Development then would be the alive.Yet how can you teach a person who can’t read and write to use a computer?

How can we make a lazy man who is willing to sell himself get a skill and then sell the skill? How can we simply put ,make sure our food isn’t poisoned? Surely their is enough jealousy to make them want to drag us into a negation of ourselves? The very thing they try to do is make us fight against ourselves and destory is from within.I am not talking merely about the villages now,the blood flows and the heart my friend are the cities.

And we are living in the heart. And we are the brains too.So a judicious mix of both can get us out of this.If we do find a wonder drug,we not only need to cure them of the disease but also give them enough support to rise above this negation .Simply put we need to make them realize that for a person who can work, there is a world waiting and that suffering isn’t everything without restrictions there is a world.I know it tough to actually make them realize that they have brains, but then we can make them feel it if we try hard enough.

And to start that,we need to use education as the tool.Prevention is better than cure.If we clean the upstream we don’t need to pick out the waste downstream. If we put this wonder drug called “education” , progress then is possible.

And to conclude my comment on Indyeah’s blog

well when you talk of art and freedom,it is a question of principle….what is happening today is simple, few people are talking us all for a ride…we have the option to kick them out and take the wheel or get down and walk…

I had asked a question,is religion necessary? And I had many varied answers, but the majority are convienced that what we have to day is not necessary and I would agree, we have painted the core values so much that we are afraid to even look at it,but still when ever says it is ugly,we take a stick to them.I think it is time we paint it white before the melee makes it black.

And again ,I leaveyou  all with a question to ponder,

” WHAT IS EDUCATION? ”

Freedom

Indian Culture

Thought ,action and the society

February 4, 2009 § 12 Comments

So after everyone has cut, dissected, chewed and what not with the whole issue of “Indian Culture”,I am responding. I am not going to get into details about the whole incident.Forgive me if I digress too much, but it is too complicated to make it simple.

Be not too tame neither, but let your own discretion be your tutor: suit the action to the word, the word to the action; with this special observance, that you o’erstep not the modesty of nature:”

This is what the bard said all those years ago.And yet after all these years of hard thought ,development and modernisation, even as we run against ourselves in a never ending quest, humans in general and pseudo-humans in particular haven’t got it yet.

the corner stone of civilization and development and innovation has always been the “thought”(a few of you might recount this post.),yet this very thought has faced a lot of opposition since time immemorial. Inventors and those who are curious to know about the world, have always faced the wrath of those who are not capable of such. From Socrates through Galileo to every other individual who was tried for thinking, discrimination has always embraced those who dare to do the unthinkable-to think.

Not that the current incidents of discrimination have thing to do with science,it has more to do with the perception and cognitive ability of those who acted(isn’t that science? seeing the world around us?).The appalling and that which stands out is the fact that these people had no voice.Yet what  is the standard by which they act?

Whose standard is the right standard?

Every creature has the ability to judge. This is instinctive, yet as we grow up the surroundings we grow in and the world around us(nurture)  influences our standards of judgement. And so the reason we have this friction is because of different views/beliefs.Now these views and beliefs are woven into the person we are when we grow.So let me go out of the bound and venture into (tyring to) see what might have led to the varied standards.

In a world of many crimes,it is possible to over power a human with guilt. And people who have “sinned” (so to speak) all their lives look for a way to “redeem” themselves. And for such redemption the path most often than not leads to “godmen” .Throughout history these men have always have been a negation of the values which the thought allows.Let me be clear,

Once you make someone feel guilty of an action, there next response is to surrender. This gives the “judge” indispensable power over the other. Now to make sure that their pawn is either  white or black(and thus ending the wanning monochrome) ,they dispel the very basic tool of human survival, the thought(long story made short,we can’t kill an animal one on one without tools)  to make sure their pawns cannot see beyond the known environment. The proof of this is the fact that many of the greatest achievers in history, have all known to keep to themselves and not belong as such to any organisation in which they would be a pawn.

Now with such a large crowd at their disposal, any opposition (anyone who as much as uses the left instead of right) has to be disposed off.It becomes easy,as the majority is the law.Not a nice picture to paint.but we should remember that many have lived all this and mankind progressed into what it is today. Yet their(those who lived) Achilles heel has been that the fact that thinkers as such cannot be united under one frame,to create a roof for those who don’t like them is impossible.

So this negation has managed to get more than a foot and a hand in the world. And so has anyone who thought differently been chopped off them.So what we need to do is make sure that peoples’ ability to think are not compromised.IF this were a true jungle and you are left to your own devices with your face against an antagonising world with an uncanny ending proposed for you, then you would have no way out of it except thinking and acting.

And this remains. But when we do find a “tribe”  we find security, this enables us to expand our thoughts and influence. Now what about the person who finds security in a thoughtless world, where the words of one who dreams at destruction is over powering and rhetoric ? He is on, strings to be pulled.

This post till now has eaten a lot of words. But don’t mistake me,I am asking you for your compassion for these pseudo-humans,I am asking you to choose which standard should survive. And let me put the other choice, which the above is a negation off-

A world where innovation is the key and love is more than that a dictionary can define. One where skill is valued and altruism is looked down upon and where the rules need not be imposed as each one has the sense of the quotation mentioned above.A world where ” force ” is that which is used to sustainably develop the world around and money is a mode of exchange.

WHICH ON WOULD YOU PREFER?

Whose fault is it?

I have read a lot of posts which go about trashing and beating the incident but I found very few looking at the fact and the problem and (almost) no one willing to place of origin.

If fable-ous stories suit your romanticism, the devil takes the face of anyone and everyone. If you prefer more tangible, there isn’t.These are ideas which have spread. After all it is from the people, for the people and by the people. So if we ever want to correct this,we should stop screaming and start looking for ways.We all are very generous at giving donations,so how about donating some time to look at what can be done?

From within the society it arises. Now it is not possible to change the views of people who are grown and senile but we can make sure that the future world is safe of such views. But then how?

A possible solution is to make schools provide education which would have more affinity to thought rather than other sorts.Make no mistake,it doesn’t mean you take away the prayers etc,I am not advocating that(nor am I trying to force the view that there should be such) but religion and its dogmatic impositions should not be tattooed into children, freedom and creativity should be the fundamentals. We can have special schools for people from less privileged backgrounds, where in they are thought how to think.

All this sounds romantic but the thing is we all don’t have time,we are running a race ,a human race. But then we forget that all this endangers for the very thing we are working for,a better tomorrow.

The onus might be heavy to bear, but then by not caring we are making it heavier for tomorrow. The problem is more complicated by the fact that no one is equal in thought and bodily. We cannot feed a code and expect the same output,we are designed to work in our own unique way.Discrimination will always be a problem. And jealously and other such emotions add make it more grotesque.

Conclusion:-

We can all write and write and condemn but the fact is that such forces do exist. When a leader who does believe in non-violence and development of human beings with an individual’s rights asserted and the world fit to be roamed and discovered(with the flora and fauna ) does take the helm, for a short while the world seems fine.Yet for something which has dominated for centuries one generation of washing does not remove the stains,it only pollutes the rivers.

I started writing this post, with a kilo of optimism but coming to a close,I don’t feel any sense of achievement. It is their mistake and it is ours as well. And we need to make sure “not a pound more” is taken. But blood shall be shed along and to those of us,who still want to see humans as complete as we are born,it adds macabre and sends into paranoia.

To suit the words to action and action to the word,i.e. use our discretion ,we need to have one standard.Yet that shouldn’t be rigid. But then rigidity has always been the shell of the society. So to simply make things look simpler so that we all can go with out lives and not forget all this as soon as the news channels have got their TRPs,let me say,we need to change the way people think. And we can only be catalysts ,so how storng are we going to be?

P.S: This post may not be complete in many sense,so I promise to reply to comments in full this time and not with smileys 🙂

Happy Republic Day

January 26, 2009 § 16 Comments

Today is India’s republic day 🙂 (a reminder to all those who have forgotten). Instead of a long post, let me ask you all a question.

This day,all those years back in 1950,our constitution came into effect. How much do you think we have improved since then, economically, socially, politically and how close are we achieving its objectives?

And to those who haven’t read my poems on India:-

My India
