detachment in attachment?

August 4, 2008 § 14 Comments

This question came to me suddenly and have pondering it since morning, what do you think is detachment in attachment?

It does sound vague to a lot of people but i did managed to make a few people think. The funny thing was who ever i asked the question, thought i knew the answers and were reluctant to answer the question.

Anyway we read everywhere, that we need to be detached from everything. But the true meaning i have see is that while we love we need to be detached too.Now this is pretty vague, but the way i see it is this-you need to willing to separate from it.I.e.you should be ready to share. This is what Gibran says

If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. And if they don’t, they never were.

But i think it can mean so much more,So what do you think detachment in attachment can mean?

And if do you think you can give up what you have?

  • Reema says:

I guess thats what tyaag of moh maya or renouncement of worldly pleasures is all about. I think its like I love so & so but I m now unaffected by whatever happens to that so & so. Thats detachment in attachment. Even if one takes the life of ascetic one cant stop loving some things/people in life but to be unaffected by the worldly going ons is true detachment. Phew!! My head is aching now. πŸ˜› πŸ™‚

  • Nita says:

Vishesh, I think this is like Reema said about spirituality. You need to read a lot about this before you can find the answers. But at times people go to gurus. As for me, I believe in earthly pleasures and attachment. πŸ˜›

  • arvind says:

    I am clueless.
    😦

  • Detachment in Attachment is a very crude way of putting it though. Letting go is not necessary detachment. Physically being with someone need not be attachment. But I do believe in what Gibran said because I have only once used the quote to imply what it means. πŸ˜‰

Though I am quite ‘detached’ with studies right now and not getting ‘attached’ to preparing for a test tomorrow. Attachment with detachment you may call it!

PS: You are on my blog roll..Boy how do you manage so many blogs!!

  • Aneesh says:

I guess, it’s pretending to have attachment to someone while emotionally you are detached πŸ™‚ or it could be the silly fights and the detachment you have for sometime till the other says sorry πŸ™‚

  • Sameera says:

This is a never ending issue. However,I believe in Gibran’s quote.I wrote something on attachment too, long back :

  • Manoj says:

In Friendship/love, it means giving space to the other person.
In spirituality, as Reema rghtly said, detachment from wordly pleasures is attachment towards God! πŸ™‚

  • Very interesting, Vishesh. I have never come across this term before.

Let me think . . . when we like someone or something . . . we get attached to the person or the object . . . we identify with the shallow bond between ourselves and other persons or things . . . on the other hand, when we truly love someone or something . . . that person or object becomes a part of ourselves . . . we develop a deep, unbreakable bond . . . it is like being attached on a different plane, a different level altogether and not merely on a physical, superficial or shallow level . . . this is detachment in attachment.

When we develop detachment in attachment, there is no question of giving up what we have . . . because we simply cannot give it up as it has become a part of ourselves!

  • Keshi says:

wow I love this post Vish!

And Im a huge fan of that beautiful quote..cos its so v true!

**that while we love we need to be detached too.

I agree. And I know wut u mean. Some ppl confuse Love with Lust..some confuse Love with Greed…some confuse Love with Materials etc etc.

**So what do you think detachment in attachment can mean?

I think it means being able to Let Go in any situation..

    Keshi.

  • Aaarti says:

Hmm, this is something that has rattled my cage as well..

I guess, when you are able to remain unaffected even after letting go of something, or to be able to go ahead with life without holding on to something/someone, that is detachment in attachment…

To love… give space… love without suffocating the other person… being able to let go… and still continue to love….
    [makes sense?]

  • jane says:

    it’s like this..

take the case of a bait-fishing rod..
it carries the bait into the waters, like a stong hunk with a beefy body..
teh fish gets attracted, it gets hooked and ATTACHED..
but is the fish for the fishing-rod?
no, it’s DETACHED from the fishing rod,for the guy who’s fishing or his friends/customers..

now draw parallels in real life, that’s how detachment in attachment works,,
