The frozen cascade of hills is kept green and orderly and productive by the iron hand of Man.
How much toil over how many eons has been demanded, to wrest each year’s meals and this unintended beauty from the dumbly-resisting soil?
For yet another generation upon too many to count, the Earth bears its burden.
But for how much longer will we need it?
