THE MADMAN-KHALIL GIBRAN

June 19, 2008 § 7 Comments

Well actually ,I an reading an omnibus of Khalil Gibran’s works.I have finished four of books till now.All of them SAND AND THE FOAM,THE PROPHET AND THE MADMAN are beautiful books. Each one of them is amazing.

The prophet is about a prophet who is going back to his home country and is speaking to the people of the country he is leaving. The way he weaves and colours all the solemn questions is something which left me in awe.

The Madman,is just amazing. Here is the introduction to it,borrowed it from here:

You ask me how I became a madman. It happened thus: One day,
long before many gods were born, I woke from a deep sleep and found
all my masks were stolen,--the seven masks I have fashioned an worn in
seven lives,--I ran maskless through the crowded streets shouting,
"Thieves, thieves, the cursed thieves."

Men and women laughed at me and some ran to their houses in fear
of me.

And when I reached the market place, a youth standing on a house-top
cried, "He is a madman." I looked up to behold him; the sun kissed
my own naked face for the first time. For the first time the sun
kissed my own naked face and my soul was inflamed with love for
the sun, and I wanted my masks no more. And as if in a trance I
cried, "Blessed, blessed are the thieves who stole my masks."

Thus I became a madman.

And I have found both freedom of loneliness and the safety from
being understood, for those who understand us enslave something in
us.

But let me not be too proud of my safety. Even a Thief in a jail
is safe from another thief.

The book has a touch of class, which is so unique to Gibran,it is visible in all
the works i have read till now. There is no time line,in any of his books.
What he writes is time less.I cannot compare him to anyone. You can see authority in his books.
When i say that i mean, the way he writes tells you,
he has written straight from within.Well i just read it ๐Ÿ™‚

I am going to finish all the other 8 books ASAP and write about them all here ๐Ÿ™‚
And you can read the madman here.

yep Khalil Gibran works are really great and timeless.
i was circled with lots and lots of questions when i first read gibran a ouple of years ago.
after reading him i got a new and renewed view of life,it gave answers to lots of questions that always sprang up.it cahnged my outlook.
    friend
the last book in that chronolgy of Khaili gibran:his life and works is broken wings.
its a great and the best love story i have read till date.i was on an emotioanal roller coaster while reading broken wings i even named my blog after it(although nobody ventures there).who else can give you a line like:
how can i lose justice in life when dreams of those who sleep upon feathers are not more beautiful than those who sleep upon earth.
this line sums up his vision.

  • Great quote. I so love Khalil’s work, have you seen his art?
